Rio Grande
The Rio Grande runs ~1,900 miles from the Colorado San Juans to the Gulf
of Mexico, and along the way carves two of the Southwest's great
whitewater corridors. In northern New Mexico it drops through the 800-foot
Rio Grande Gorge — the continuous Class IV "Taos Box," the mellow Orilla
Verde, and the popular Class III "Racecourse" near Pilar — all within the
BLM Rio Grande del Norte National Monument. Far downstream it forms the
US-Mexico border through Big Bend, slicing the limestone Santa Elena,
Mariscal, and Boquillas canyons of the national park and the remote
